Lee's guidelines for surviving the undead apocalypse

Hi there,
Here are the guidelines I have created for myself in case the unthinkable happens:
* Prioritize
Put basic needs like food and water at the top of your list, at first there will be plenty but eventually food and drinkable clean water will be hard to come by.  An other scenario you have to consider is when you have to make the choice between two or more people to rescue or allow in your group, again you have to prioritize and choose the ones who can contribute most to your group of survivors.
* Always have a weapon
I'm thinking about this a lot because where I live ( Belgium ) it is forbidden to carry a firearm, the lack of guns in this country could cause a problem when the sh*t hits the fan, obviously you have the short ranged weapons like crowbars, types of swords, hatchets, etc.. There will however be a time when that just ain't gonna cut it and you have to pick of an enemy from afar. When you have a gun, know that it makes noise and that it can make a bad situation into a deadly one. A bow would come in handy, this is easy to come by or build yourself when needed,  arrows could be re-used, the only problem that people could have wit this weapon is that it needs training, training... that is not possible when the apocalypse is knocking on your frontdoor which brings me to my next point.
* Organise before they rise
This oh so well known saying by zombie-connaisseur Mel Brooks makes a lot of sense.
Bassicaly it comes to this: " be prepared ".
I'm thinking in the direction of a well stocked storage room with non-perishables, an "emergency" backpack with equipment as duct-tape, first aid kit, cans of food, lighters/matches and maybe a magazine or a book. Training your endurance, speed and agility, also basic knowledge of mechanics and weaponry is a
real plus!
* Small groups
I am not out of this one yet. I would prefer to be around people so I would choose for a small group if possible. 3-6 people should be enough to get you through some rough patches and it is easier to deliver tasks around, it beats doing evrything alone and having nobody to save or assist you. Bigger groups attract more attention and therefor also more danger.
* Trust no one
Everybody is going to be exhausted, frightened, hungry and trying to survive.
* Be prepared to leave everything
This is one of the main reasons people die during emergencies. How many times have you heard that a guy runs back into a burning building to get something he forgot, this happens more than you think.
* Don't be a hero
Don't try to save someone if you know it's a lost cause, you see this way to much in movies, in fact use the attention the victim draws from you as a way to get to safety!
* Invest in earplugs
It may look like something stupid, but re-usable earplugs are a real gift if you are sitting safely in your safehouse when somebody holds guard and you are trying to sleep.
* Expect the worst
Never go into a building without observing it a while first. There may be some hidden shamblers and even if you are real sure it is safe just do a sweep of the perimeter just to be sure.
* Always check for bitemarks and scratches
Not even with new survivors but also with yourself, the adrenalin could cause your body to ignore the pain and before you know you're moaning and hunting for fresh meat!
**************************************
Well that's it for today, I'll think of some more and publish it.
With kind regards,
Fellow zombie-enthusiast Lee
